Rugby Season Recap

At least I got the pass off before being destroyed…

If the title doesn’t give it away coming so soon in the spring playoff season, we were unfortunately knocked out by Old Blue in the National Round of 64 playoff game.

It was a battle, with Old Blue shooting out to a 23-0 lead to start the game. We buckled down with some impressive defense and ended the half down 23-7. We almost added two additional scores, to the one breakaway try we knotted, but came up just a couple meters short each time in our drive. Old Blue did end up bringing some floaters who play on both their D1 and D3 sides down, so I’m proud we were able to stick it out and finish with a respectable 37-10 final score. Funny enough, we did get an interview with national rugby news source rugbymag.com about it here, although I don’t think those players affected the results much in the end.

Watching their games in the Round of 32 (against Buffalo) and Sweet 16 (against Seacoast), they put up scores of 42-10 and 54-22, so it’s nice to know we can hang around with some of the best competition in DIII rugby. Speaking with Old Blue’s coach recently, they’re actually bumping up to DII next year, so that’ll be one roadblock we don’t have to worry about.

Now that the playoffs are over, we had time last weekend for the 2nd Annual I-90 Rugby tournament. The usual suspects were there including Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.

Although we had a slow start against Albany, losing by a try or two, we managed to pick it up and put the hurt on Rochester (About 75-5), and surprisingly Buffalo (33-7). If only we played Albany after getting our groove on, who knows what could have happened. Quite the difference from last year, when we lost to them 70-13.

Buffalo Rugby had a nice write-up on their website about us too:

Syracuse is a methodical, well-organized team, and used their aggression and cohesion to good effect, while fatigue took hold of Buffalo.  Physical exhaustion manifested itself in several mental lapses.  Whether poor passes, knock-ons, or just generally slow response time, every type of BRC mistake was punished with the Chargers putting points on the board.  Only at the very end of the game could Buffalo string together multiple phases, and that resulted in a converted try for BRC’s only points, in a 33-7 loss.

A good time was definitely had by all, especially with semi-decent/non-rainy weather for once. I’ll be following up shortly on a development where I tried out for the US Olympic 7’s Rugby feeder team in NYC this past weekend. Went quite a bit better than expected…

Win or Go Home!

Chargers Rugby

The past couple weeks sure have been rugby-loaded, with our final two regular season games against Buffalo, South Buffalo and a friendly match against Syracuse University all taking place.

The first game against Buffalo was a battle, with (of course) barely above freezing temperatures. I’m pretty sure it snows out that way during the summer, because I can’t once recall a nice day for rugby out there. Regardless, the game outcome was not as desired with us losing to Buffalo 12-10. That kept us in 2nd place in the league table, but dropped us to 5 points back from first place South Buffalo.

The South Buffalo squad also happened to be our final regular season opponents, and with a combination of things (a Chargers win by more than two tries, and us also scoring at least 4 tries) we could have made up the 5 points and won the league. We buckled down very well for this one, and the attacking mentality pushed us to a 17-0 win. Unfortunately, this means we were unable to score the 4 tries needed for the final bonus point and 1st place in the league, but we definitely built our confidence. Here’s the final table:

DIII North - League Table

Now on to the playoffs, where the two top seeds from DIII North and DIII South are playing next weekend in the National Round of 64 and Round of 32 matches. If both South Buffalo and ourselves beat the respective squads from DIII Empire South, we’ll play each other again for a Sweet 16 ticket, but we’ll have to deal with that once we get there.

The squad we’ll be facing is the DIII side of Old Blue, who are based out of NYC. Their DI squad regularly sends guys to play for the USA national team, The USA Eagles, and I’m just crossing my fingers we don’t run into any of those guys looking to get a run in against some DIII competition. We’ve also started to watch some tape on our playoff opponents, and it’s definitely another training tool we can use in our arsenal.

This weekend was a little more relaxed, with our B-side putting a hurt on my alma mater, Syracuse University, to the tune of about 45-15. This was a tiring one for me though, as I got some mountain biking in at Green Lakes State Park before the game. Didn’t think I was going to play in this one, and ended up staying in all 80 minutes as a mix of scrum half and fullback. Definitely getting my cardio in for Ironman training.

Now that it’s finally not snowing in Syracuse, I’ve also started adding some outdoor biking (mountain and road) to the schedule. It’s nice to get on the bike, and the mix between the two types is a lot more interesting than just riding the flat hills out by my house.

Finally got a decent mountain bike!

Finally got a decent mountain bike!

Going to need to really drop the hammer on training soon though. The very hilly Syracuse 70.3 is in about two and a half months, and the Ironman Lake Placid isn’t too far after that. Here we go!

Let the (Rugby) Games Begin!

Syracuse Chargers Village Lions Rugby

After the last game ended in November with a 65-0 pasting of the Rochester Aardvarks, the dates for the final two spring league games against Buffalo and South Buffalo were circled on the calendar. The time has finally come, and we’re heading west today to take on the Buffalo Rugby Club. They were the team to knock us out of the playoffs last year, so stamping our ticket to the Empire Rugby Union championships against them would be a pretty good payback.

Syracuse Chargers NYC

We’ve had two friendly matches this spring, and the progress of the team is definitely starting to show. The first was against the DII Village Lions down in Harlem, who we came out very strong against and walked away with a 43-28 victory, give or take a try.

The second game was against the Ft. Drum Barracks Rangers, who although are relatively new playing with each other due to all the deployments and moves they make being in the military, were a very physical team that pushed us in different ways than the Village Lions did. That game ended up even more in our favor though, and we walked off our home pitch with a 48-8 win two weeks ago.

The road to the national championship starts today, all we have to do is go out there and win more 8 games for a championship!
