So much for an “Offseason”

With the holiday season coming up, the transition from racing back to training is in full swing. Except for one 10k and one 5k, I have nothing on the race calendar until the Lake Effect Half Marathon next February.

Looking at the totals from this year, it definitely feels like I can step it up in regards to training. Actually I’ll have to, because the races I’m registered for are longer than my races plus training distances combined this year (200 running / 300 biking miles).

Schedule-wise, I’ve started strength training before work instead of the usual late night gym session, and it’s really helping to workout more often and longer. We’ll see how these morning lifts and afternoon swims/runs go over an extended period of time, but the current plan is:

Weightlifting – 5x @ 1 hour

Running – 4x @ 30 miles per week

Swimming – 2x @ 4000 yards per week

Biking – 2x @ 4 hours per week

Not sure if the bigger beneficiary will be rugby or my swim/bike/run, but it’s definitely not going to hurt either over the next 3-4 months.

It’s nice to really fill in my 2014 race schedule too, as I’ll be signed up for the majority of my races as of this week. There is a marked transition away from running, where the Syrathon Race Series played a huge part, this year. 2013 will finish up with 22 running races and 4 triathlons, with 2014 having 3 running races and 8 triathlons scheduled so far.

One of the races is the Timberman Half Ironman Relay in New Hampshire, so we’re currently accepting funny team name ideas (post them in the comments below, you don’t need to signup for wordpress to comment).

Where’s the ice, I’m sore already…

Fall Rugby Season Wrap Up

Image

Well, that went quickly. After a couple hiccups, the Syracuse Chargers finish up the season at 6-2, good enough for 2nd place in the Empire Union so far. We have the two final spring games in April against the #3 and #1 ranked teams (that last one hurts to type). Hopefully there isn’t too much snow on the ground, but living in Syracuse stranger things have happened.

Luckily we have access to Manley Field House during the winter months (even if it is at pretty strange times), so we should be firing on all cylinders from the start. Pretty cool recruiting tool as well:

For the first time in just about forever I didn’t have a race this weekend. After this weekend’s game, I’m definitely grateful.

It didn’t feel like one of those “battle” games like last week (especially with a 65-0 score, our first shutout this season), but I am more sore than just about any game this season. Somehow the try streak continues (6 or 7 weeks in a row now), it definitely paid off running in support and catching just about the easiest pass in the game. (Thanks Frazer!)

With the end of rugby practice for a bit, along with the pool being closed this week, means I have a strange amount of free time. Looks like we have some great midweek weather that’s about 40 degrees warmer than today, so I’ll snag a final day or two of biking before moving indoors for the year. I have a bike fit scheduled in a week or so with Bike Loft, it’ll be interesting to see what changes they make, and how it impacts the comfort past the 30 mile mark. Considering I’ll be knocking out 112 miles before I know it, seems like this should be quite useful even with a small improvement.

The next rugby position up are the #4 and #5 players, known as the “Locks” or “2nd Rows”, and are part of the group called the “Tight 5”. The “Tight 5” include the three previous positions covered (Pop quiz: Do you remember the previous position names?), and bound very tight (duh) to each others jersey/shorts, and provide a majority of the power/push in the scrum.

The 2nd rows tend to be taller than the other forwards and are usually the ones lifted during the line outs as well.
